Christa Ludwig Sings "An die Musik" / Christa Ludwig chante An die Musik

Today marks the 83rd birthday of the great German mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig. Born in 1928 in Berlin, Ludwig made her debut in Frankfurt as Prince Orlofsky at the age of 18(!) in a career that lasted until 1994. In her prime, her wonderful lyric mezzo was ideal in roles like Cherubino, Octavian, Komponist, Adalgisa, and Dorabella.  In mid career, Ludwig was a famous Dyer's Wife, Carmen, Brangaene, and Amneris. In the late 60's and 70's, she experimented with soprano roles like Leonore (Fidelio), Marschallin, Donna Elvira, Kundry and Lady Macbeth, but it led to a vocal crisis that almost ended her career. She talks about this episode in her career candidly in her heart-felt autobiography, In My Own Voice.  After a period of recovery, she continued to sing major roles until she formally retired after a farewell tour in 1994. Today Ludwig is a highly respected voice teacher.  To celebrate her birthday, here is a young Christa Ludwig singing Schubert's "An die Musik" from 1961, with Geoffrey Parsons at the piano.

Aujourd'hui marque l’anniversaire de naissance de la grande mezzo-soprano allemande Christa Ludwig. Née en 1928 à Berlin, elle a fait ses débuts à Frankfort dans le rôle du prince Orlovsky à l’âge de 18 et sa carrière prit fin en 1994. Au sommet de sa carrière, son magnifique mezzo lyrique était idéal pour incarner des rôles comme Cherubino, Ottavia, Ariadne, Adalgisa et Dorabella. À sa mi-carrière, elle était célèbre pour ses rôles de Färberin, Carmen, Brangäne et Amneris. À la fin des années 1960 et au début des 1970, elle a chanté les rôles de soprano tels que Leonore, la Maréchale, Donna Elvira, Kundry et Lady Macbeth, mais elle a éprouvé des problèmes de voix qui ont presque mis fin à sa carrière. Elle en parle avec franchise dans son autobiographie In My Own Voice. Après une guérison complète, elle a continué d’interpréter de grands rôles jusqu’à sa retraite en 1994. Aujourd’hui, elle est une professeure de chant très respectée.
