Lotfi Mansouri: a Life in Opera / Lotfi Mansouri : une carrière opératique

Lotfi Mansouri was born in Iran but came to California as a student in 1947. He worked for Herbert Graf - the man he called his "artistic father and mentor" - in opera houses in Zurich and Geneva. When Lotfi was passed over as Graf's successor, he went to Canada in 1975 to succeed Herman Geiger-Torel as head of the Canadian Opera Company. Under Lotfi the COC was transformed from a mediocre provincial company into a world-class organization which could attract stars of the stature of Joan Sutherland. But its Achilles heel was the house it was cursed to perform in, the O'Keefe Centre, a soul-destroying barn of a place. Lotfi did everything he could to get a new home for the COC and several times came very close. But it was not to be. He moved on to become head of the San Francisco Opera instead.

 

San Francisco had a more prestigious opera company than Toronto but just as many problems. One of them was the music director Donald Runnicles. According to Lotfi, Runnicles was constantly intriguing against him and ultimately engineered his departure.

 

But at the age of 81 Lotfi can look back on a remarkable career and it is not over yet. This season he directed two productions at the San Diego Opera.

Lotfi Mansouri est né en Iran, mais il est venu en Californie comme étudiant en 1947. Il a travaillé  pour Herbert Graf, sa figure paternelle artistique et son mentor, dans les opéras à Zurich et à Genève. Lorsqu’on lui a préféré un autre candidat pour succéder à Herbert Graf, il s’est installé au Canada en 1975 et a remplacé Herman Geiger-Torel comme directeur de la Compagnie d’opéra canadienne. Sous la direction de Lotfi, la COC a été transformée en une compagnie d’opéra de classe mondiale qui pouvait attirer des vedettes telles que Joan Sutherland. Mais, la faiblesse de la COC était la salle du centre O’Keefe où elle présentait ses opéras. La qualité sonore de la salle était très pauvre. Lotfi a tout fait pour trouver une nouvelle salle de concert, mais il n’a jamais réussi. Par la suite, il est devenu directeur de l’Opéra de San Francisco.

San Francisco avait une compagnie d’opéra plus prestigieuse que Toronto, mais avec autant de problèmes, dont son directeur musical Donald Runnicles. Selon Lotfi, Donald Runnicles ne s’entendait pas avec lui et a été la cause de son départ.

Mais, à l’âge de 81 ans, Lotfi a connu une carrière remarquable et elle n’est pas encore terminée. Cette saison, il a réalisé deux productions pour l’Opéra de San Diego.
