Last Sunday marked the the birthday of the great American soprano Eileen Farrell. (Feb. 13 1920 -  Mar. 23 2002)  Few classical singers in history moved with as much ease between classics and pop/jazz. She began in radio in 1942 and made her recital debut in 1950. In 1952, she was chosen by Toscanini as soprano soloist for his Beethoven 9th recording. She made her stage debut as Santuzza in 1956 in Florida, followed by debuts in Chicago, San Francisco, and then the Met. Her roles included Alceste, Maddalena, Gioconda, Leonora in Forza and others. But her true metier was the concert stage.  She returned to recording jazz in 1987, long after she retired from the stage. In 1999, she wrote her autobiography, Can't Stop Singing, a fascinating read. A great Wagnerian, here is Farrell singing the Liebestod from Tristan.

Dimanche dernier a marqué l’anniversaire de naissance de la grande soprano américaine Eileen Farrell (13 février 1920-23 mars 2002). Peu de chanteuses dans l’histoire de la musique ont chanté aussi bien la musique classique que la musique pop et jazz. Elle a fait ses débuts à la radio en 1942 et en récital en 1950. En 1952, Toscanini l’a choisi comme sa soprano soliste pour son enregistrement de la Symphonie no 9 de Beethoven. Elle a fait ses débuts sur scène dans le rôle de Santuzza en 1956 en Floride, puis à Chicago, San Francisco et au Met. Elle a aussi incarné Alceste, Maddalena, Gioconda, Leonora et plusieurs autres.
