John Adams Discusses His Operatic Works / John Adams discute de son œuvre opératique
John Adams has become the best-known and most often performed "classical" composer in the United States. This Saturday, February 12, his opera Nixon in China will be featured in the series Met HD Live! in movie theaters around the world. Adams will make his conducting debut at the Met leading his own work.
Adams popularity as a composer surely has a lot to do with his interest in all kinds of music, and especially in his operas, his interest in important political issues. He has great respect for jazz and rock music and often incorporates elements of both in his own works. His opera Dr. Atomic was done last season at the Met and whatever one thinks of the opera, there is no doubt that its subject matter - how nuclear weapons have changed our world - is a matter of great importance to all of us. Similarly, Nixon's visit to China years ago was an event that changed the world and reflects Adams fearless willingness to take on big ideas in his operas.
