Coinciding with the 255th anniversary of Mozart's birthday (Jan 27 1756 - Dec 5 1791), many opera companies are currently staging works by the great Austrian composer.  On the stage of Toronto's Four Seasons Centre is one of Mozart's most beloved creations, Die Zauberfloete, or The Magic Flute as the COC chooses to use its English title.  Statistics shows that in 2010 there was a total of 662 performances of The Magic Flute in 132 productions in 95 opera houses around the world.  It beats out Carmen (629 performances) and Le nozze di Figaro (609 performances) as the most popular opera last year.  Here is Pamina's divine "Ach, ich fuhl's" in which she wishes for death when mistakenly thinking that her Prince Tamino no longer loves her. The great German soprano Elisabeth Grummer (Mar. 31 1911 - Nov. 6 1986), a magnificent Agathe, Elsa and Contessa, was also a definitive Pamina.  Here she is, from the Salzburg Festival in 1956. Taking a very slow tempo, Grummer sings this difficult aria with exemplary delicacy, lovely mezza voce and plangent tone.

La voici au Festival de Salzbourg en 1956. D’un tempo très lent, elle chante cette aria difficile avec une délicatesse exemplaire, un joli mezza voce et un ton retentissant.
