Louis Quilico: A Tribute / Hommage à Louis Quilico

Sharing a birthday last Friday (Jan. 14) with the great tenor Ben Heppner is another great Canadian singer, baritone Louis Quilico.  Quilico had an extraordinary career that lasted 45 years, from his debut in 1954 to the late 1990s. He passed away unexpectedly from complications following knee surgery in 2000.  His voice in its prime was a rich, robust and ringing baritone, the hallmark of a true Verdi singer. He was also noted for his collegiality and generosity of spirit on-stage and off.  This video excerpt was posted by his son, baritone Gino Quilico. Excerpts here include comments from his first wife Lina Quilico, Italian soprano Mirella Freni, stage director Lotfi Mansouri, and tenor Luciano Pavarotti, plus performance footage of Quilico as Rigoletto, Rodrigo in Don Carlo (with a very young Placido Domingo), and Tonio's prologue from I Pagliacci.
