I was in Washington this past October for concerts by the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center. During my visit I spoke to Steven Hendrickson, principal trumpet of the NSO. Steven studied with the legendary Adolf Herseth and supported himself in his early years by working as a broker on the Chicago Stock Exchange. Since the major work on the program in Washington was the Mahler Fifth, I asked Steve about the trumpet solo that opens the piece, and about working with Christoph Eschenbach, the orchestra's new music director.

My companion video this week is a recent performance of the Mahler Fifth by Gergiev and the World Orchestra for Peace at last summer's Proms in London. The trumpet soloist is Timur Martynov of the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra in St. Petersburg.

J’étais à Washington en octobre dernier pour assister aux concerts du National Symphony Orchestra au Kennedy Center. Lors de ma visite, j’ai parlé à Steven Hendrickson, première trompette du NSO. Steven a étudié auprès du légendaire Adolf Herseth et a gagné sa vie dans sa jeunesse en tant que courtier à la Bourse de Chicago. Puisque l’œuvre principale du programme à Washington était la Symphonie n^o 5 de Mahler, j’ai interviewé Steven au sujet du solo de trompette qui ouvre la pièce et au sujet de Christophe Eschenbach, le nouveau directeur musical de l’orchestre.
