VPO New Year's Concert 1987 - Karajan and Battle / Le concert du Nouvel An de l’OPV de 1987 : Karajan et Battle
The annual Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert is one of the world's great musical traditions. Tickets for the concerts themselves in the Musikverein are virtually impossible to get, and millions around the world see it on television or listen to it on the radio.
One of the most memorable of these concerts took place on New Year's Day 1987. Herbert von Karajan conducted his first and only New Year's concert with the Vienna Philharmonic. It was eagerly anticipated and perhaps most of all because Karajan had not conducted anywhere in the previous three months. Some wondered whether he would ever conduct again as his back problems became progressively more severe. As you can see in the video he leads the concert seated on a kind of bench rigged up on the podium and he is obviously in pain. And earlier in the year he had undergone prostate surgery and contracted Lyme Disease. Right up until the day of the first concert - the New Year's Concert is actually the last in a series of three repetitions of the same programme - there was serious doubt whether Karajan would be physically able to go through with it. But although his gestures are limited there is no doubt about who is in charge. The entire concert is magical and one of the highlights was undoubtedly Strauss' Voices of Spring with Kathleen Battle, a Karajan favourite, in top form.
