Rolando Villazon Sings "Che gelida Manina" / Rolando Villazon chante Che gelida manina

Today is the birthday of the great Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (b. Dec. 22 1858 - d. Nov. 29 1924).  Of the ten operas he composed - I am counting Il Trittico as a single work - all but two (Le Villi and Edgar) are pillars of the standard repertoire. His three most popular works, La boheme, Madama Butterfly, and Tosca, likely rank in the top ten of most frequently performed operas in the world. To remember his birthday, I have chosen Rodolfo's beautiful aria "Che gelida manina" from Act One of La boheme.  It's difficult to choose just one clip of this aria among the many marvelous ones on Youtube, but I've settled on Mexican tenor Rolando Villazon's from the 2002 Bregenzer Festspiele. His fresh-voiced and ardent Rodolfo is well matched by the lovely Mimi of Alexia Voulgaridou, overall much preferable to the Robert Dornhelm film six years later with Villazon and Netrebko.

Aujourd’hui est l’anniversaire de naissance du grand compositeur italien Giacomo Puccini (22 déc. 1858-29 nov. 1924). Des dix opéras qu’il a composés (je compte Il Trittico comme une seule œuvre), seulement deux ne font pas partie du répertoire courant. Ses trois œuvres les plus célèbres, La Bohème, Madama Butterfly et Tosca, font partie des 10 opéras les plus joués au monde. Afin de souligner son anniversaire de naissance, j’ai choisi la belle aria de Rodolfo Che gelida manina du premier acte de La Bohème. Il est difficile de choisir qu’un seul vidéoclip de cette aria parmi les nombreux sur You Tube, mais j’ai choisi celui de Rolando Villazon du Festival Bregenz en 2002. Son Rodolfo très passionné correspond étroitement au Mimi d’Alexia Voulgaridou. Je préfère ce vidéoclip au film de Robert Dornhelm tourné six ans plus tard et mettant en vedette Villazon et Netrebko.
