Joshua Bell Plays Manuel Maria Ponce's Estrellita / Joshua Bell joue Estrellita de Manuel Maria Ponce

Today is the birthday of Mexican composer Manuel Maria Ponce, who was born in 1882 on this day, and died on April 24, 1948.  Ponce was a composer of orchestral, chamber, and instrumental works. He was particularly known for his guitar and piano compositions, as well as arrangements of traditional Mexican folksongs. Among his songs, none is more famous than Estrellita, or "Little Star."  This melody has a magical, perfumed quality that lingers with the listener afterwards.  There are many clips of this song by classical singers on Youtube, but to my surprise, I wasn't able to find a truly satisfactory one.  I won't name names, but the men are often too loud and the women too shrill. So I decided to pick an instrumental version.  The best modern version is that of Joshua Bell, with the arrangement by the great Jascha Heifetz. It comes from the 2007 Last Night of the Proms, conducted by Czech conductor Jiri Belohlavek.
