Peter Hofmann: In Memoriam / En mémoire de Peter Hofmann

German tenor Peter Hofmann passed away on Nov. 29 after a 16-year struggle with Parkinson's. Born on Aug. 22, 1944 in Marienbad, Hofmann sang in a rock band before he ventured into opera. He made his debut as Tamino in Lubeck in 1972. He abandoned the lyric tenor roles and became a Wagnerian a few short years later.  His most memorable performance was as Siegmund opposite the luminous Sieglinde of American soprano Jeannine Altmeyer in the Bayreuth Centennial Ring directed by Patrice Chereau.  Hofmann had a parallel career singing pop and soft rock. Some would argue that he was better in pop/rock than in opera. His singing career ended when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's in the early 1990's. His last appearance was in a German production of Phantom of the Opera.  In his time, Hofmann was considered one of the most glamorous and charismatic of singers, and a target of media attention. He penned an autobiography, the English translation of the title is "Singing is Like Flying" which came out around 1985.  To remember Peter Hofmman, I have chosen the Wintersturme and Du bist der Lenz from Act 1 Die Walkure, with Hofmann and Altmeyer. Hofmann looks like a storybook Siegmund, one is hard pressed to find a more visually believable pair of Walsung twins.  This was the 1976 Chereau Ring from Bayreuth, videotaped in 1980.

Le ténor allemand Peter Hofmann est décédé le 29 novembre après une longue lutte contre la maladie de Parkinson. Né le 22 août 1944 à Marienbad, Hofmann a chanté dans un groupe rock avant de s’aventurer dans le monde opératique. Il a fait ses débuts dans le rôle de Tamino en 1972 à Lübeck. Il a cessé de jouer les rôles de ténor lyrique et est devenu un ténor wagnérien quelques années plus tard. Sa prestation la plus mémorable a été lorsqu’il a incarné Siegmund accompagné de la soprano américaine Jeannine Altmeyer qui jouait merveilleusement Sieglinde à Bayreuth dans la production légendaire réaliser par Patrice Chereau. Hofmann avait aussi une carrière parallèle en tant que chanteur populaire et chanteur de musique rock légère. Certains pensent qu’il était un meilleur chanteur populaire qu’un chanteur d’opéra. Sa carrière de chanteur s’est terminée lorsqu’il a appris qu’il était atteint de la maladie de Parkinson au début des années 1990. Sa dernière prestation a été dans une production allemande du Fantôme de l’Opéra. Durant sa vie, Hofmann était considéré comme l’un des chanteurs les plus séduisants et les plus charismatiques et les médias parlaient toujours de lui. Son autobiographie est parue en 1985. Afin de lui rendre hommage, j’ai choisi Wintersturme et Du bist der Lenz du premier acte de Die Walkure avec Hofmann et Altmeyer. Hofmann est un Siegmund très romanesque. Ce vidéoclip date de 1980.
