Paul Robinson in Conversation with Christoph Eschenbach Pt. 2 / Paul Robinson parle avec Christoph Eschenbach 2e partie

In this second and concluding part of my recent conversation with Eschenbach I ask about his repertoire choices. For example, he is fond of Liszt's piano music but the symphonic poems/ Not so much.

One of his current projects is conducting at the Paris Opera in November and December. It is a new production of Hindemith's opera Mathis der Maler. Eschenbach believes this is an unjustly neglected work and he seems to be particularly attracted to the theme of the opera. The work concerns the painter Matthias Gruenewald and his struggles with himself and his conscience and a world gone mad during the Peasant's War. What is the responsibility of an artist? Matthias the painter was a real person from the 16th Century, but his struggle is reflected in Hindemith's own attempts to live and work in Nazi Germany in the 1930s. And while Eschenbach was only a child in Germany when the Nazis held power, his life too was profoundly touched by their evil. Not surprisingly, Eschenbach is deeply sympathetic to Hindemith's music from that period and to Matthias Gruenewald's life and work too. During rehearsals for this production of the opera Eschenbach has kept a reproduction of Gruenewald's most famous work - the Altarpiece of Issenheim - on his piano. This Paris production of Mathis der Maler will be broadcast live on December 11 at 7 pm (CET), on France Musique.

My companion video this week on LSM is an excerpt from a performance of Don Quixote by Richard Strauss. Eschenbach conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra with Yo-Yo Ma as soloist in a performance given at Carnegie Hall in 2004.
