Abbado Conducts Mahler Symphony No. 1 / Abbado dirige la Symphonie no 1 de Mahler

In my companion LSM video this week Robert Oppelt of the National Symphony in Washington, D.C. talks about playing the double bass solo at the beginning of Mahler's Symphony No. 1, third movement. Here is a 1989 performance by Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic. The solo is played by Rainer Zepperitz, long-time principal double bass of the BPO. When Zepperitz joined the orchestra in 1951 he was its youngest member at the age of 21. He became principal 6 years later and remained in the orchestra through three legendary music directors: Wilhelm Furtwaengler, Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado. With his distinctive height and bushy black mustache he was one of the most recognizable members of the orchestra. Sadly, Zepperitz passed away just about a year ago at the age of 79.
