Paul Robinson in Conversation with Robert Oppelt of Washington's National Symphony Pt. 2 / Paul Robinson parle avec Robert Oppelt du National Symphony Orchestra

Robert Oppelt is the principal bass of Washington's National Symphony Orchestra. I spoke to him recently about the orchestra's new music director - Christoph Eschenbach - and about various issues pertaining to his instrument. On his website, www.robertoppelt.com,  Robert has an article he wrote about playing the double bass solo at the beginning of the third movement of Mahler's Symphony No. 1. In our conversation I asked him about this article. For a performance of this solo please see the companion video I have chosen this week. It features the longtime principal double bass of the Berlin Philharmonic, Rainer Zepperitz, with Abbado conducting.
