Here is the second part of my conversation with Steven Hendrickson, principal trumpet of Washington's National Symphony Orchestra. Much of our discussion has to do with rotary valve trumpets. These are standard in German and Austrian orchestras but special instruments in North American orchestras. Increasingly, they are being used in American and Canadian orchestras in German repertoire, as they were last weekend in the Beethoven Seventh performance by the LA Phil transmitted to movie theatres. The subject came up because the National Symphony's new music director, Christoph Eschenbach, has expressed a preference for these instruments.

Voici la deuxième partie de mon entretien avec Steven Hendrickson, première trompette du National Symphony Orchestra. La majorité de notre conversation portait sur la trompette à valves rotatives. Cet instrument est d’usage courant dans les orchestres allemands et autrichiens, mais on le retrouve rarement dans les orchestres nord-américains. On s’en sert de plus en plus dans le répertoire allemand des orchestres américains et canadiens, comme la fin de semaine dernière dans la Symphonie no 7 de Beethoven par l’Orchestre philharmonique de Los Angeles dont le concert était diffusé dans les salles de cinéma. On a parlé de la trompette à valves rotatives parce que Christoph Eschenbach, le nouveau directeur musical du National Symphony affiche une préférence pour cet instrument.
