Ben Heppner Sings 'In fernem Land' from Lohengrin / Ben Heppner chante In fernem Land de Lohengrin

On Friday Jan. 14, the great Canadian tenor Ben Heppner will turn 55.  A native of Dawson Creek, BC and resident of Toronto, Heppner has sung in virtually all the great opera houses and concert halls in the world.  He achieved a breakthrough when he won the Metropolitan Opera Auditions and the Birgit Nilsson Prize in 1988.  Heppner is generally considered to be the greatest Canadian heldentenor since Jon Vickers, although for many years, Heppner himself eschewed the title of heldentenor, referring to his own voice as a "large lyric tenor." Among his wide-ranging repertoire, he is most famous for Peter Grimes, Aeneas, Samson, Ghermann, Tristan, Florestan, Otello, Lohengrin, Walter von Stolzing, and Siegfried.  He also created the title role in McTeague (1992) and Captain Ahab in Moby Dick (2010).  To celebrate Heppner's birthday, I've chosen Lohengrin's monologue 'In fernem Land' in a 2005 open air performance from Schloss Herrenchiemsee, a castle just outside Munich. Christian Thielemann conducts the Munich Philharmonic in this memorable performance.

Il a chanté  dans toutes les grandes salles et opéras du monde. Il a été découvert lorsqu’il a gagné les Metropolitain Opera Auditions et le prix Birgit Nilsson en 1988. Il est généralement considéré comme le plus grand ténor héroïque depuis Jon Vickers, mais pendant plusieurs années, il a pu éviter ce titre, car il considérait plutôt comme un ténor lyrique. Afin de célébrer son anniversaire de naissance, j’ai choisi l’air de Lohengrin In fernem Land lors d’un concert à ciel ouvert en 2005 au Château de Herrenchiemsee situé à l’extérieur de Munich. Christian Thielemann dirige l’Orchestre philharmonique de Munich dans cette prestation mémorable.
