Today marks the birthday of German composer Kurt Weill (March 2 1900 - April 3 1950).  His creative life spanned thirty of his fifty years, from the German period (around 1920 to 1933) to his American period, when he fled Nazi Germany in March 1933 for the US, where he lived until his death of a heart attack in 1950.  A socialist, Weill's German period was marked by collaborations with Bertolt Brecht, resulting cutting-edge creations (The Threepenny Opera, Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny) distinctive for their social commentary.  His American period was marked by works that were commercial successes (Street Scene, One Touch of Venus, Lady in the Dark, Lost in the Stars) but the uniquely Weill style of gritty, socio-political critique was much diminished.  To remember his birthday, here is one of his best known creations, Youkali, composed in 1934. Originally known as Tango habanera and composed as incidental music for the play Marie Galante, it was lated adapted as a song with evocative and enigmatic text by Roger Fernay in 1946. This video clip of Youkali was filmed in Toronto with Canadian soprano Teresa Stratas.  She is a champion of Weill and made two brilliant discs of his songs for the Nonesuch label in the early 1980's, The Unknown Kurt Weill and Stratas Sings Weill.
