 Sir John Barbirolli (1899-1970) was one of the greatest of British conductors and in the 40 years since his death his reputation has continued to grow through his recorded legacy. One of his contemporaries, Sir Thomas Beecham, was the more flamboyant personality, but Barbirolli was a more serious musician and had greater insight into the works at the heart of the repertoire. For example, Barbirolli became a deeply convincing Mahler interpreter while Beecham conducted no Mahler at all.

After years of toiling in the trenches with various British orchestras Barbirolli was offered the most prized conducting post in the world of music: the music directorship of the New York Philharmonic. It was an enormous honour but it also turned out to be nearly the end of his international career. In taking the post in 1936 Barbirolli was succeeding Toscanini, a legend in his own time. Barbirolli did his best for seven seasons in New York - and some of the recordings he made there are very fine indeed - but the leading critics never stopped comparing him to Toscanini. And against this yardstick he was always found wanting.

Barbirolli returned to England and took a position with the Halle Orchestra in Manchester. At the time, the Halle was a shambles and had to be virtually rebuilt as an orchestra. But Barbirolli welcomed the challenge and made Manchester his home for the next 27 years. With the Halle Barbirolli made dozens of classic recordings. In the last decade of his life he returned to America to head up the Houston Symphony and at the same time became a favourite guest conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic.

As a conductor of Elgar he was incomparable. His recordings of the symphonies, Sea Pictures (with Janet Baker) and the Cello Concerto (with Jacqueline du Pre) are among his greatest achievements.

This arrangement has nothing to do with period performance but it was brilliantly conceived and in this performance stunningly well played.

L’un de ses contemporains, Sir Thomas Beecham, possédait une personnalité plus flamboyante que lui, mais Sir John Barbirolli était plus sérieux et il avait une meilleure connaissance des œuvres au cœur de son répertoire. Par exemple, Sir John Barbirolli est devenu un grand interprète de Mahler, alors que Sir Thomas Beecham n’interprétait pas la musique de Mahler.

Il a roulé sa bosse pendant plusieurs années au sein de nombreux orchestres britanniques avant d’être offert le poste le plus prestigieux dans le monde musical : directeur musical de l’Orchestre philharmonique de New York. C’était un grand honneur, mais ce poste a aussi presque mis fin à sa carrière internationale. Il a succédé au légendaire Toscanini en 1936. Le maestro a fait de son mieux pendant sept ans à New York et il a aussi enregistré de très bons albums, mais les critiques n’ont jamais cessé de le comparer à Toscanini.

Sir John Barbirolli est retourné  en Angleterre et a pris un poste avec le Hallé Orchestra à  Manchester. À l’époque, le Hallé Orchestra devait être rebâti. Sir John Barbirolli a relevé le défi et a habité Manchester pendant 27 ans. Avec le Hallé Orchestra, il a enregistré une douzaine d’albums. Lors de la dernière décennie de sa vie, il est retourné aux États-Unis pour diriger l’Orchestre symphonique de Houston et il a aussi dirigé l’Orchestre philharmonique de Berlin comme chef invité.

Il était un interprète notable d’Edward Elgar. Ses enregistrements des symphonies, Sea Pictures (avec Janet Baker) et le Concerto pour violoncelle (avec Jacqueline du Pré) sont parmi ses plus grandes réalisations.
