Juliane Banse Sings Hugo Wolf's 'Kennst du das Land' / Juliane Banse chante Kennst du das Land par Hugo Wolf

Yesterday marked the death of Austrian composer Hugo Wolf (Mar. 13 1860 - Feb. 22 1903) 151 years ago.  Best known for his lieder compositions, Wolf's expressionistic intensity, uncommon harmonic language and melodic inspiration are uniquely his own.  For much of his life Wolf suffered from bipolar affective disorder - he had bursts of creativity followed by complete silence. He spent his last years confined to an asylum in Vienna. Of his hundreds of songs, perhaps the most famous is 'Kennst du das Land' set to text by Goethe. This poem inspired famous compositions from Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Liszt, but arguably the setting by Wolf has the greatest emotional intensity. There are many wonderful recordings of this song on Youtube, including famous ones by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Christa Ludwig.  Here is an orchestral version sung beautifully by German soprano Juliane Banse, with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin conducted by Kent Nagano.

Hier marquait la mort du compositeur autrichien Hugo Wolf (13 mars 1860- 22 février 1903) il y a 150 ans. Il est surtout connu pour ses compositions lieder, son intensité  expressive, son inspiration mélodique et son langage harmonique. Pendant une bonne partie de sa vie, il a souffert d’un trouble affectif bipolaire. Il a eu des éclats de créativité suivie d’un silence total. Il a été interné à Vienne lors de ses dernières années. Parmi ses centaines de chansons, Kennst du das Land d’après un texte de Goethe est certainement sa plus célèbre. Ce poème a aussi inspiré Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann et Liszt, mais la version par Hugo Wolf est sans doute la plus intense. Il y a plusieurs enregistrements de cette chanson sur YouTube, dont les versions célèbres d’Elisabeth Schwarzkopf et Christa Ludwig. Voici une version orchestrale chantée par la soprano allemande Juliane Banse avec l’Orchestre symphonique allemand de Berlin dirigé par Kent Nagano.
