Opera Conductor Richard Buckley in Conversation with Paul Robinson (Pt. 1) / Le chef d’orchestre Richard Buckley en entrevue avec Paul Robinson (1re partie)
Richard Buckley is one of the busiest opera conductors in North America. He is based in Austin, Texas where he is principal conductor of the Austin Lyric Opera (ALO), but he has worked with nearly every opera company in the United States and Canada. I remember an especially fine production of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk he conducted with the Canadian Opera Company. He'll be leading Cav and Pag at the National Arts Centre next season.
And Maestro Buckley has an even stronger Canadian connection. His mother - Mary Henderson - was born in Montreal, studied at McGill and had a career as a singer and CBC broadcaster.
In Pt. 1 of our conversation he talks about his family - his father was the well-known opera conductor Emerson Buckley - and his career. In Pt. 1 next week he talks about the ALO's forthcoming production of Jonathan Dove's opera Flight.

In my companion video this week Richard's father - Emerson Buckley - conducts the New Jersey Symphony with soloist Luciano Pavarotti.
