The great German composer Ludwig van Beethoven passed away this coming Saturday 184 years ago. He was born on Dec. 15 1770 in Bonn, moved to Vienna in 1792, studied with Haydn and became the pianist and one of the most influential composers of western music.  It's impossible to do him justice in a short paragraph, so it's best to let his music speak for itself.  Here is the first song of his best known song cycle, An die ferne Geliebte Op. 98, sung by the great German baritone Hermann Prey

Le grand compositeur allemand Ludwig van Beethoven est décédé il y a 184 ans ce samedi. Il est né  le 15 décembre 1770 à Bonn et s’est installé à Vienne en 1792 où il a étudié avec Haydn. Il est devenu l’un des plus grands compositeurs de la musique classique. C’est impossible de lui rendre justice dans un court paragraphe, donc je vais laisser sa musique parler de lui-même.
