Natalie Dessay Sings Olympia's Doll Song from The Tales of Hoffmann / Natalie Dessay chante Les oiseaux dans la charmille d’Olympia dans Les Contes d’Hoffmann

Yesterday marked the 130th anniversary of the death of French composer Jacques Offenbach (June 20 1819 - Oct. 5 1880). A prolific composer of operettas - a staggering 99! - Offenbach also composed the occasional "serious" work, the best known of which is Les contes d'Hoffmann which is part of the standard repertoire. Composed near the end of his life, Hoffmann had its premiere posthumously at the Opera-Comique in 1881, four months after the death of Offenbach. Based on a story by ETA Hoffmann who is also the protagonist, the complex story revolves around Hoffmann's vain pursuit of "true love" as represented by Olympia, Antonia, Giulietta, and Stella. Occasionally the three heroines (plus the non-singing Stella) are taken by the same soprano, though rarely with success. Here is French soprano Natalie Dessay's magnificent Olympia's Doll Song in a fantastical production from the 2000 Orange Festival. To many opera lovers, Dessay in her prime was the greatest Olympia of our time.

Hier était le 130e anniversaire de la mort du compositeur français Jacques Offenbach (20 juin 1819-5 octobre 1880). Un compositeur prolifique d’opérettes (99!), il produit parfois aussi des œuvres « sérieuses » dont la mieux connue Les Contes d’Hoffmann qui fait partie du répertoire traditionnel. Composé vers la fin de sa vie, Les Contes d’Hoffmann a eu sa première à l’Opéra-Comique en 1881, quatre mois après le décès d’Offenbach. D’après un livret d’ETA Hoffmann qui est le protagoniste, l’histoire complexe tourne autour d’Hoffmann qui est amoureux d’Olympia, Antonia, Giulietta et Stella. Parfois, les trois héroïnes (et Stella qui ne chante pas) sont jouées par la même soprano, mais rarement avec succès. Voici Natalie Dessay dans le rôle d’Olympia qui chante merveilleusement Les oiseaux dans la charmille dans cette production fantastique de 2000 au Festival Orange. Pour de nombreux amateurs d’opéras, Natalie Dessay, à l’apogée de sa carrière, est la meilleure Olympia de notre époque.
