Salvatore Licitra Sings "E Lucevan le Stelle" from Tosca / Salvatore Licitra chante E lucevan le Stelle de Tosca

Tenor Salvatore Licitra was catapulted to fame in 2002 when, at the eleventh hour, he replaced an indisposed Luciano Pavarotti as Cavaradossi at a Metropolitan Opera Tosca.  Since then the singer from Sicily has graced major opera houses around the world.  In Canada, his appearances so far are limited to recitals in Vancouver and Toronto, plus an orchestral gala concert in Montreal.  I interviewed Licitra for an article in La Scena Musicale in conjunction with his Montreal appearance there about six years ago - a very personable and press-friendly artist.  His most recent Canadian appearance was at the Roy Thomson Hall Vocal Series - until today that is!  He is in town as the guest star in a Bel Canto Foundation Gala that also features the debut performance of the Toronto Concert Orchestra under conductor Kerry Stratton.  For more information about the Foundation and this gala concert, go to  www.belcantofoundation.ca  To mark Licitra's return to Toronto, I have chosen his "E lucevan le Stelle" from Act 3 Tosca, in a La Scala live performance in 2000.  He sings with ingratiating tone and ardent, Italianate style. Riccardo Muti leads the La Scala Orchestra.  I believe this complete performance is available commercially on DVD.

Le ténor Salvatore Licitra a été  propulsé sur la scène musicale internationale en 2002 lorsqu’il a remplacé à la dernière minute Luciano Pavarotti dans le rôle de Cavaradossi de l’opéra Tosca au Met. Depuis, le chanteur sicilien a joué les grands opéras du monde. Au Canada, il a seulement donné des récitals à Vancouver et à Toronto et un concert gala à Montréal.
