Montserrat Caballe sings "Casta Diva" from Bellini's Norma / Montserrat Caballé chante Casta Diva de Norma de Bellini
Tomorrow (Thursday Sept. 23) marks the 175th anniversary of the death of the great Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini. To many, he was the greatest bel canto composer of all time, with a melodic inspiration second to none. Many would agree that, of the ten operas he composed - eleven if you count the revision of Bianca e Germano intoBianca e Fernando! - the greatest is Norma. Divas with the chops find the title role irresistible, from Ponselle and Callas on down to Sutherland, Caballe, Gruberova and to the many Normas of today. To do the title role justice, the singer must possess a beautiful spinto coupled with dramatic intensity. The acid test is her big entrance aria, Casta Diva, followed by the cabaletta. Not many sopranos have the requisite beauty of tone, rock solid legato, a very long breath-line in the aria, and flexibility for the coloratura passages in the cabaletta. There are literally dozens of versions by sopranos of various stripes on Youtube, some successful, others not. Here is Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballe at the legendary performance that took place at the Orange Festival in 1974 opposite the Pollione of Canadian tenor Jon Vickers. Caballe shows that she has the technique - particularly her glorious high piano, mezza voce and incredibly long breath-line - for an exquisitely gentle Casta Diva.
