Isabel Bayrakdarian Sings Dvorak's Song To The Moon / Isabel Bayrakdarian chante Air à la lune de Dvorak

Today marks the birthday of the great Czech composer Antonin Dvorak (Sept. 8th 1841 - May 1st 1904).  Among his many compositions is Rusalka, the best known of his ten operas.  Based on the Slavic legend of the water nymph who longs for the love of a human, this opera epitomizes the Romantic Spirit. Composed in 1900 and premiered the following year, Rusalka is the work of the mature Dvorak at his most melodically inspired.  Very popular in the middle European countries,Rusalka is rarely staged in North America.  I recall seeing it at the Met in the 1990s first with the great Slovak soprano Gabriela Benackova, and later with Renee Fleming.  The Canadian Opera Company staged it two years ago with a production borrowed from Theatre Erfurt in Germany.  The best known piece is the aria, "Song to the Moon", in which Rusalka expresses her love for the Prince. There are many wonderful versions of this aria on Youtube. I have chosen Canada's own Isabel Bayrakdarian singing it with the Armenian Philharmonic. There is no date listed in the clip, but my guess is about five or six years ago, in conjunction with her visit to Armenia. Bayrakdarian's shimmering, ethereal soprano is well captured here.

Aujourd'hui marque l’anniversaire de naissance du grand compositeur tchèque Antonin Dvorak (8 septembre 1841-1 mai 1904). Parmi ses nombreuses compositions, Rusalka est la mieux connue de ses dix opéras. Fondé d’après la légende slave d’une créature des eaux qui cherchait l’amour d’un homme, cet opéra illustre parfaitement l’esprit romantique. Composé en 1900 et présenté pour la première fois l’année suivante, Rusalka est l’œuvre d’un Dvorak d’âge mûr en pleine inspiration mélodique. Très populaire dans les pays de l’Europe centrale, Rusalka est rarement présenté en Amérique du Nord. Je me souviens de l’avoir vu au Met dans les années 1990 en premier avec la grande soprano slovaque Gabriela Benackova et plus tard avec Renée Fleming. La Compagnie d’opéra canadienne l’a présenté il y a deux ans dans une production adaptée du Théâtre Erfut en Allemagne. L’aria la mieux connue est l’Air à la lune dans laquelle Rusalka déclare son amour pour le prince. Il y a de nombreuses merveilleuses versions de cette aria sur YouTube. J’ai choisi la Canadienne Isabel Bayrakdarian qui chante avec l’Orchestre philharmonique arménien. Le vidéoclip est sans date, mais j’estime qu’il est de 5 ou 6 ans conjointement avec sa visite en Arménie. Son esprit sublime de soprano est bien saisit dans ce vidéoclip.
