Celibidache Conducts Verdi / Celibidache dirige Verdi

I first saw Celibidache conduct in 1969. It was at the Helsinki Festival and he was leading the Swedish Radio Symphony in music by Mussorgsky, Brahms, Beethoven (with Michelangeli) and Stravinsky. I was amazed by the detail and excitement of his performances, and the man was extraordinarily charismatic. But he was known to be a perfectionist and demanded an inordinate number of rehearsals. This meant that most of the major orchestras didn't want any part of him. In his later years he conducted mostly the Stuttgart Radio Symphony and the Munich Philharmonic. In my opinion, he became increasingly mannered in his conducting as the years went by and some of his performances were downright bizarre. One of them is this 1990 performance of Verdi's La Forza del Destino Overture with the Munich Philharmonic. It is incredibly slow - compare Toscanini or Muti - and boring. Surely he could have made it this dull in one rehearsal - or no rehearsal. I can't imagine how the players put up with him.
