A few weeks ago the Bayreuth Festival announced that conductor Christian Thielemann would become its "Artistic Advisor." Thielemann has conducted over 100 performances at Bayreuth - mostly the Ring cycle - and is widely recognized as one of the foremost Wagner conductors of his generation. In the video he is seen conducting the Vienna Philharmonic in the Prelude to Act I of Tristan und Isolde. 

Thielemann is a controversial figure both for his musical and political views, and his is widely regarded as being "difficult." He recently resigned as director of the Munich Philharmonic after a dispute with management over artistic control. Many people who have worked with him complain about his oversized ego.

But there is no doubt that many of his performances are very impressive both for their control of detail and for their expressive power. I must admit that I found his recordings of Schumann symphonies with the Philharmonia Orchestra little more than routine. On the other hand many of his opera recordings - there is a recent DVD of Der Rosenkavalier with Renee Fleming - and his Bruckner symphonies with the Munich Philharmonic are exceptionally good.

Thielemann has recently been appointed to head the Dresden Staatskapelle and his first recording with that orchestra - Bruckner's Symphony No. 8 - has just been released. At the age of 51 Christian Thielemann continues to grow as an interpreter and the best may be yet to come.

Il y a quelques semaines, le festival de Beyreuth annonça que le chef d’orchestre Christian Thielemann serait son « conseiller artistique ». Il a dirigé plus de 100 prestations au festival dont la majorité de l’Anneau du Nibelung. Il est largement reconnu comme l’un des plus grands chefs d’orchestre de la musique de Wagner de sa génération. Dans ce vidéoclip, il dirige l’Orchestre philharmonique de Vienne dans le prélude du premier acte de Tristan et Isolde. 

Christian Thielemann est un personnage controversé pour ses opinions politiques et musicales et il est reconnu comme étant « insupportable ». Il a démissionné de son poste de directeur musical de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Munich récemment pour des questions de créativité artistique. Beaucoup de personnes qui ont travaillé avec lui se plaignent de son ego démesuré. 

Mais, il n’y a aucun doute qu’un grand nombre de ses prestations sont très impressionnantes tant pour leurs attentions aux détails que pour leurs puissances d’expressions. Je dois admettre que j’ai trouvé son enregistrement des symphonies de Schumann avec l’Orchestre Philharmonia très ordinaire. Cependant, un grand nombre de ses enregistrements d’opéra (le DVD de Der Rosenkavalier avec Renée Fleming) et les symphonies de Bruckner avec l’Orchestre philharmonique de Munich sont exceptionnellement bons. 


Il a été nommé dernièrement directeur musical de la Staatskapelle de Dresde et son premier enregistrement avec cet orchestre la huitième symphonie de Bruckner vient tout juste de paraître. À 51 ans, il ne cesse de croître comme chef d’orchestre et le meilleur reste à venir.
