In Memoriam: Tenor Anthony Rolfe-Johnson ( Nov. 5 1940 - July 21 2010) / En mémoire du ténor Anthony Rolfe-Johnson (5 novembre 1940-21 juillet 2010)

I was sad to read that English tenor Anthony Rolfe-Johnson passed away at 69 on July 21 in London.  Rolfe-Johnson had been ill for several years with Alzheimer's.  I have vivid memories of his Peter Grimes which I saw at the Met in the 1990s.  I remember at the time, I went hoping to hear Ben Heppner, but got Rolfe-Johnson instead.  I was not at all disappointed. His interpretation was quite different from the Grimes I was used to, having seen both Jon Vickers (twice) and Ben Heppner in Vancouver, Chicago and the Met.  Rolfe-Johnson was a lyric tenor, with a beautiful, refined timbre, excellent flexibility and admirable musicianship, ideal in Mozart and oratorio repertoires.  On stage, he didn't have the hulking physical presence of a Heppner or Vickers. Rather, his Grimes was gentler, more vulnerable, and curiously more human, affecting and poignant.  Having spent his young adulthood as a farmer in Sussex, Rolfe-Johnson didn't receive formal voice training until he was almost thirty, very late compared to other professional singers. But he went on to have a very fine career in opera and as a soloist with major orchestras.  In his memory, I have chosen the recording of "Fuor del Mar", from the complete recording of Idomeneo he made under the baton of John Eliot Gardiner.  He sings the original Munich version of the aria with all its intricate coloratura beautifully.  It is one of my favourite versions.

C’est avec tristesse que j’ai appris le décès du ténor britannique Anthony Rolfe-Johnson à l’âge de 69 ans le 21 juillet à Londres. Depuis plusieurs années, il était atteint de la maladie d’Alzheimer. J’ai des souvenirs très nets de son Peter Grimes que j’ai vu au Met dans les années 1990. Je me souviens que je suis allé au concert espérant voir Ben Heppner, mais j’ai vu Anthony Rolfe-Johnson. Je n’ai pas été déçu. Son interprétation de Grimes n’était pas comme les autres que j’ai vus auparavant comme celui de Jon Vickers (deux fois) et de Ben Heppner à Vancouver, Chicago et au Met. M. Rolfe-Johnson était un ténor lyrique avec un merveilleux timbre raffiné d’une flexibilité incroyable et un sens musical admirable, idéal pour Mozart et les répertoires oratorios. Sur la scène, il n’avait pas la présence physique imposante d’un Ben Heppner ou d’un Jon Vickers. Mais, son Grimes était plus doux, plus vulnérable et curieusement plus humain, plus touchant et plus émouvant que le Grimes de ces deux ténors. Ayant vécu sa vie de jeune adulte comme fermier à Sussex, il n’a pas suivi de cours de chant professionnel avant l’âge de trente ans ce qui est très tard comparativement aux autres chanteurs professionnels. Mais, il a eu une très belle carrière tout de même dans le monde opératique et comme soliste avec les grands orchestres. Afin de lui rendre hommage, j’ai choisiFuor del Mar d’Idoménée sous la baguette de John Eliot Gardiner. Il chante la version originale de l’aria avec toutes ses coloratures complexes de façon merveilleuse. C’est l’une de mes versions préférées.
