Jaap van Zweden Plays Vivaldi / Jaap van Zweden joue Vivaldi

Before he became a full-time conductor Jaap van Zweden was concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and a well-known violin soloist. As violinist he recorded a number of concertos including the Paganini, Violin Concerto No. 1, the Barber Violin Concerto and quite a few works by Vivaldi including The Four Seasons. Here he is with the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam playing part of the Summer Concerto. 

 

Most young men and women who become conductors are pianists, but others are violinists (Pinchas Zukerman), cellists (Toscanini) or even double bass players (Koussevitsky). But as a trivia question how many important conductors can you think of who have been not only violinists but concertmasters of major orchestras? I can think of a few in addition to van Zweden: Charles Munch - he was concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra - and Anshel Brusilow. Brusilow was concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra and later became conductor of the very same orchestra which van Zweden now heads, the Dallas Symphony.

Avant de devenir chef d’orchestre à temps plein, Jaap van Zweden était premier violon de l’Orchestre royal du Concertgebouw ainsi qu’un célèbre soliste au violon. En tant que violoniste, il enregistra de nombreux concertos incluant le Concerto pour violon n^o1 de Paganini, le Concerto pour violon de Barber, et de nombreuses œuvres de Vivaldi incluant Les Quatre Saisons. La plupart des jeunes musiciens qui deviennent des chefs d’orchestre sont des pianistes. Les autres sont des violonistes (Pinchas Zukerman), des violoncellistes (Toscanini) ou même des contrebassistes (Koussevitsky). Mais combien de chefs d’orchestre importants pouvez-vous nommer qui ont été à la fois violonistes et premiers violons de grands orchestres? À part Jaap van Zweden, je ne peux en nommer que quelques un: Charles Munch était premier violon de l’Orchestre du Gewandhaus de Leipzig et Anshel Brusilow était premier violon de l’Orchestre de Philadelphie. Plus tard, M. Brusilow est devenu chef d’orchestre du même orchestre que dirige maintenant Jaap van Zweden, l’Orchestre symphonique de Dallas.
