Friday, July 23rd marks the birthday of Italian composer Francesco Cilea, who was born in 1866 and died in 1950. Together with Puccini, Giordano, Leoncavallo, Mascagni, Catalani, Ponchielli and others, Cilea was an exponent of the "blood and guts" verismo style.  Today he is primarily remembered for his opera Adriana Lecouvreur, a real diva vehicle that hovers on the fringes of the standard repertoire.  Cilea also composed four other operas but they are pretty much forgotten except for the aria, "Lamento di Frederico" from the rarely performed L'Arlesiana.  A young Caruso sang its premiere in 1897. Since then, countless tenors have given this great aria a crack.  Taped in a Munich concert recently , the German tenor Jonas Kaufmann sings this gorgeous aria with virile, Italianate tone, exemplary technique with great dynamic shading, and true depth of feeling.  No wonder Kaufmann is considered the premiere spinto tenor of our time - he sings this aria as beautifully as anyone, past and present.

Ensemble avec Puccini, Giordano, Leoncavallo, Mascagni, Catalani, Ponchielli et autres, Francesco Cilea était un champion du vérisme italien. Aujourd’hui, il est principalement considéré pour son opéra Adriana Lecouvreur, un véhicule pour les divas qui plane sur les bordures du répertoire classique. Il composa aussi quatre autres opéras, mais ils sont presque tous oubliés sauf pour l’aria Lamento di Federico de L’Arlesiana qui est rarement jouée. Un jeune Caruso l’a chanté pour la première fois en 1897. Depuis, d’innombrables ténors ont interprété cette grande aria. Enregistré en concert à Munich dernièrement, le ténor Jonas Kaufmann chante cette magnifique aria avec une voix virile de style italien, avec une technique exemplaire aux grandes nuances dynamiques et avec un véritable sentiment de profondeur. Il est pas surprenant que Kaufmann soit considéré comme le principal ténor spinto de notre époque. Il chante cette aria aussi bien que tout autre ténor d’hier et d’aujourd’hui.
