Thomas Hampson sings Franz Liszt's "Oh! Quand je dors" / Thomas Hampson chante « Oh ! quand je dors » de Franz Liszt

Last Saturday (July 31) was the anniversary of the death of the great Hungarian composer Franz Liszt, who died on that date 124 years ago. Liszt was of course famous for his piano compositions, but he was also an inspired composer of songs. Here is one of his greatest, "Oh! quand je dors" set to text by Victor Hugo. This song is part of Volume Two of a group of songs Liszt composed in 1843. These songs are often performed in recitals today, but particularly this one song, which defines Liszt as a songwriter.  There are literally dozens of versions of this on Youtube, most of them sung by sopranos from Leontyne Prices to Barbara Bonney.  My favourite however is this version by American baritone Thomas Hampson, sung in the alto key. Recorded in 1993 with Geoffrey Parsons at the piano, Hampson amply shows why he is America's foremost classical singer of songs. He has it all - beauty of tone, technical control, attention to textual nuance, and a certain indefinable spiritual quality.

Il fut bien sûr célèbre pour ses compositions pour piano, mais il était aussi un excellent compositeur de chansons. Voici une de ses grandes compositions Oh! quand je dors, dont les paroles sont de Victor Hugo. Cette chanson fait partie du deuxième volume d’un groupe de chansons composées par Liszt en 1843. Aujourd’hui, ces chansons sont souvent interprétées en récitals, mais c’est cette chanson en particulier qui le définit comme compositeur. Il y a des douzaines de versions de cette chanson sur YouTube, la plupart sont interprétées par des sopranos comme Leontyne Prices et Barbara Bonney. Ma version préférée est celle du baryton américain Thomas Hampson, chanté avec sa voix d’alto. Enregistré en 1993 avec Geoffrey Parsons au piano, Thomas Hampson démontre largement pourquoi il est le chanteur classique le plus éminent aux États-Unis. Il a tout : un ton mélodieux, une maîtrise technique, une attention aux nuances des paroles et une certaine qualité spirituelle indéfinissable.
