Riccardo Chailly on his way to Boston? / Riccardo Chailly à Boston?

The natives are getting restless in Boston as James Levine continues to cancel concerts due to one illness or another. The celebrated conductor of the Met and the Boston Symphony has been missing in action more than he has been on the podium during the past few seasons. The Met has been able to fill in admirably with a variety of guest conductors, and especially with the announcement that Fabio Luisi has been appointed principal guest conductor. But in Boston the orchestra feels the need for a resident music director and Levine is no longer able to fill that role.


Norman Lebrecht has written that Riccardo Chailly has been approached about taking over in Boston. In Lebrecht's view this would be a huge coup for the Boston Symphony to get a conductor of Chailly's stature. He was music director of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and now heads the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Here he is with his Leipzig forces and pianist Martha Argerich in the opening pages of the Schumann Piano Concerto.

Riccardo Chailley était directeur musical de l’Orchestre royal du Concertgebouw et il dirige actuellement l’Orchestre du Gewandhaus de Leipzig. Le voici accompagné des musiciens de l’Orchestre de Leipzig et de la pianiste Martha Argerich dans le premier mouvement du Concerto pour piano de Schumann.
