I recently saw a production of the Kurt Weill-Ogden Nash musical One Touch of Venus at the Shaw Festival. I was reminded again of Weill's extraordinarily varied career in music from Berlin to Broadway. Lotte Lenya, Weill's wife, was considered his most authoritative interpreter during her lifetime, but Ute Lemper was unquestionably her successor, and a remarkable artist in her own right. Here she is singing "Surabaya Johnny" from Happy End.
