Tebaldi and Bergonzi sing Ponchielli's La Gioconda / Tebaldi et Bergonzi chantent La Gioconda de Ponchielli

Yesterday was the birthday of Italian composer Amilcare Ponchielli (Aug. 31 1834 - Jan. 16 1886). Although he composed a dozen operas, only one - La Gioconda - is performed with any degree of regularity. Typical of the verismo genre, the libretto of La Gioconda is not exactly a great work of literature, and the dramatic situation stretches one's imagination even by the wildest operatic standards, which may explain why it is so rarely performed. But what glorious music!  I have chosen two selections - the great tenor aria "Cielo e mar" sung by Carlo Bergonzi, and the last act scena "Suicidio" sung by the great Renata Tebaldi.  I've had the great good fortune of seeing these two artists as Enzo and Gioconda respectively at the Met in the 1960's. It was a most unforgettable experience.

Hier fut l’anniversaire de naissance du compositeur italien Amilcare Ponchielli (31 août 1834 — 16 janvier 1886). Même s’il a composé une douzaine d’opéras, seulement La Gioconda est présenté régulièrement. Typique du genre vérisme, le livret de La Gioconda n’est pas exactement un grand œuvre littéraire. Les situations dramatiques dépassent l’imaginable, même selon les standards opératiques les plus fous ce qui explique pourquoi cet opéra est rarement interprété. Mais quelle merveilleuse musique! J’ai choisi deux sélections : la grande aria pour ténor Cielo e mar chanté par Carlo Bergonzi et Suicidio! du dernier acte chanté par la grande Renata Tebaldi. J’ai eu la chance de voir ces deux artistes dans les rôles d’Enzo et Gioconda au Met dans les années 1960. Ce fut une expérience inoubliable.
