In orchestras both large and small it is the conductor who gets most of the attention. He or she is the face of the orchestra. Last season Alan Gilbert took over as conductor of the New York Philharmonic and so far he has been a huge success. He is innovative in his choice of repertoire and consistently interesting as an interpreter of music both new and old. But he can't do it alone. Standing or sitting in front of him are the fine musicians of the orchestra and standing behind him is a huge apparatus of administrators. The lead administrator for the NY Phil for many years now has been Zarin Mehta - yes, he is Zubin Mehta's brother - and he deserves much of the credit for making everything work. But Zarin is now in his 70s and this week he announced that he is stepping down as of 2012. They will be big shoes to fill. You will see Zarin introducing Alan Gilbert near the beginning of this video. You will also see Alan Gilbert at work. The team has two more seasons together, then Gilbert will have a new partner. Good luck in finding one to match Zarin. He has set new standards for what an executive director of a symphony orchestra should be.
