Jussi Bjoerling Sings the Flower Song from Bizet's Carmen / Jussi Bjoerling chante La fleur que tu m’avais jetée de Carmen de Bizet

Monday Oct. 25 marked the birthday of the great Georges Bizet (Oct. 25 1838 - June 3 1875).  In a lamentably short life, Bizet produced many wonderful operas, and Carmen is decidedly his signature work.  For me, the Flower Song sung by Don Jose represents Bizet at his most melodically inspired.  Here we have Jussi Bjoerling singing it with golden tone, complete with a gorgeous diminuendo B flat at the end. Too many tenors do not have the vocal control to sing this phrase dolcissimo like Bjoerling here. Yes, his French is flawed, but this rendition is the gold standard.

Le lundi 25 octobre marque l’anniversaire de naissance du grand compositeur Georges Bizet (25 octobre 1838-3 juin 1875). Durant sa courte vie, il a produit plusieurs opéras merveilleux et Carmen est sans aucun doute son plus grand opéra. Selon moi, La fleur que tu m’avais jetée chanté par Don José démontre le compositeur au sommet de sa forme. Dans ce vidéoclip, Jussi Bjoerling la chante parfaitement, y compris le si bémol decrescendo à la fin. Peu de ténors maîtrisent leurs voix dans ce passage très doux aussi bien que lui. Oui, son français n’est pas fantastique, mais son interprétation est parfaite.
