Here is an excerpt from Wagner's Die Meistersinger, featuring tenor Ben Heppner with James Levine conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. The concert was given in 1999 at the outdoor venue called Waldbuehne where the Berlin Philharmonic gives a concert every year. Both Heppner and Levine are in fine form. But in the past eleven years Levine has gone through one medical issue after another. He now conducts sitting down and in recent appearances has walked either with a cane or with other assistance. And yet he is forging ahead with a punishing schedule that would be daunting for a man half his age (67). Just this past weekend he conducted Wagner's Das Rheingold at the Met in New York then raced up to Boston to lead a performance of Mahler's Resurrection Symphony that same night! By all accounts, both performances were excellent. Everyone connected with the Met and the Boston Symphony breathed a sigh of relief after all that Levine has been through this past year.
