Dame Joan Sutherland: In Memoriam / À la mémoire de Dame Joan Sutherland

Two days ago, the opera world lost one of its brightest stars.  Australian soprano Dame Joan Sutherland passed away in Switzerland after a long illness. Dame Joan was unique in that she was a coloratura soprano with a huge voice, extremely rare among coloraturas. Thanks to her husband Richard Bonynge who carefully shaped her career, Sutherland became the most celebrated singer in the bel canto fach - pace Beverly Sills fans! - from the late 1950's until her retirement in 1990.  She had a significant association with both the Vancouver Opera and the COC.  She sang in Vancouver when she was in her prime in the 60's and 70's, and sang Norma, Anna Bolena, Hamlet and Adriana with the COC under the Lofti Mansouri era. To remember this great singer, I have chosen her "Casta Diva" from Norma, one of her greatest roles, in a performance with the Australia Opera, conducted by Bonynge.

Il y a deux jours, le monde opératique a perdu l’une de ses grandes étoiles. La soprano australienne Dame Joan Sutherland est décédée en Suisse après une longue maladie. Elle était unique, car elle était une soprano colorature qui possédait une énorme voix ce qui est rare chez les coloratures. Grâce à son mari Richard Bonynge qui a orienté avec soin sa carrière, elle est devenue la cantatrice la plus vénérable du bel canto de la fin des années 1950 jusqu’à sa retraite dans les années 1990 (avec toute déférence aux amateurs de Beverly Sills!). Elle a eu une association importante avec le Vancouver Opera et la COC. Elle a chanté à Vancouver lorsqu’elle était à l’apogée de sa gloire dans les années 1960 et 1970. Elle a chanté dans les opéras Norma, Anna Bolena, Hamlet et Adriana Lecouvreur avec la COC sous la direction de Lofti Mansouri. Afin de souligner sa grande carrière, j’ai choisi son interprétation de l’aria Casta Diva de Norma, l’un de ses plus grands rôles, avec l’Opéra d’Australie sous la direction de Richard Bonynge.
