Rudolf Serkin and Isaac Stern / Rudolf Serkin et Issac Stern

As I young man I belonged to the Columbia Record Club, and every month a new LP would arrive in the mail showcasing artists from the Columbia roster. They had the Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras under contract as well as soloists of the stature of Rudolf Serkin, Isaac Stern, Glenn Gould,  and Zino Francescatti, and the conductors included Leonard Bernstein, Bruno Walter, Eugene Ormandy and George Szell. One could hardly go wrong listening to nothing but Columbia recordings; there was one great performance after another. I heard a great deal of Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms for the first time listening to recordings by Rudolf Serkin. 

Rudolf Serkin was born in Vienna but spent most of his career in the United States. For a long time he headed the Curtis Institute. On the occasion of his 70th birthday he was interviewed but one of his illustrious colleagues - Isaac Stern, no less! Serkin was rather shy and generally avoided encounters with the press but with his friend Isaac asking the questions he revealed a great deal about himself and about music.

Dans ma jeunesse, j’appartenais au club de disque de Columbia Records et chaque mois, je recevais par la poste un nouveau 33 tours d’un des artistes de Columbia Records. L’Orchestre de Philadelphie, l’Orchestre de Cleveland, Rudolf Serkin, Issac Stern, Glenn Gould, Zino Francescatti, Leonard Bernstein, Bruno Walter, Eugene Ormandy et George Szell étaient parmi les artistes signés chez Columbia Records. On ne pouvait pas se tromper en écoutant un disque de Columbia Records. C’était une grande prestation après une autre. J’ai écouté beaucoup de Beethoven, Mozart et Brahms pour la première fois lorsque je jouais les albums de Rudolf Serkin.

Rudolf Serkin est né à Vienne, mais il a vécu la majorité de sa vie aux États-Unis. Il a dirigé pendant de nombreuses années l’Institut Curtis de musique. Lors de son 70^e anniversaire, il a été interviewé par nul autre que son illustre collègue Issac Stern! Il était plutôt timide et évitait généralement les médias, mais lorsque son ami Issac Stern l’a interviewé, il a fait connaître plusieurs faits à son sujet et sur sa musique.
