In Memoriam: Giuseppe Taddei / Hommage à Giuseppe Taddei

The great Italian baritone Giuseppe Taddei, who sang with all the opera greats the likes of Tebaldi, Callas and Pavarotti, died in Rome at the age of 93 on Wednesday (June 2, 2010), just short of his 94 birthday which would have been on June 26.  A native of Genoa, he passed away at around 1530 GMT in his own house in Rome.  Taddei began his career at the age of 18 conducted by Toscanini, and sang in opera houses throughout the world into his 70s. I had the great good fortune of hearing him around 1986 or so at the Met, when he made a belated debut there as Falstaff. I remember him singing with a voice still full and vital, and his boundless energy on stage was amazing. It was incredible to think that he was 69 at the time!  As a remembrance to his passing, here is a short clip of Taddei as Falstaff complete with the powerful high note at the end of his monologue....a great singer!

Le grand baryton italien Giuseppe Taddei, qui s'est produit avec les grands noms de l'art lyrique – les Tebaldi, Callas et autres Pavarotti – est décédé à Rome le 2 juin dernier. Il aurait eu 94 ans le 26 juin 2010. Né à Gênes, il a commencé sa carrière à l'âge de 18 ans sous Toscanini et a chanté sur les scènes les plus prestigieuses du monde. Il se produisait encore passés les 70 ans. J'ai eu la chance de l'entendre vers 1986 au Met, où il a fait ses débuts sur le tard dans le rôle de Falstaff. Sa voix était toujours aussi riche et vivante et il faisait preuve d'une incroyable énergie alors qu'il avait déjà 69 ans. Pour marquer son décès, voici un bref vidéo-clip de Taddei dans Falstaff.
