Soprano Anneliese Rothenberger (19 June 1926 - 24 May 2010) sings Sophie in the Final Trio from Der Rosenkavalier / La soprano Anneliese Rothenberger (19 juin 1926-24 mai 2010) chante Sophie dans le Trio final de Der Rosenkavalier

On Monday May 24, the opera world lost a fine singer in soprano Anneliese Rothenberger, who passed away in Munsterlingen, Switzerland after a brief illness. Rothenberger had a high soprano of crystalline beauty, ideal in soubrette and light lyric roles of Mozart and Strauss. She also was highly regarded in operettas as well as contemporary music, venturing into the works of Henze, Berg, Hindemith, Orff and Pfitzner.  A beautiful woman and a fine actress, her Lulu was considered a sensation.  Born in Mannheim, Germany, Rothenberger studied with Erika Muller and made her debut in Koblenz in 1943. Later she joined the Hamburgische Staatsoper. She also guested in Salzburg Festival, Munich, the Wiener Staatsoper and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Perhaps her most famous role was Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier.  As a tribute to her, here is the Final Trio, with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf as the Marschallin and Sena Jurinac as Octavian, conducted by Herbert von Karajan, captured in a 1960 film. It is sad that Schwarzkopf, Karajan and now Rothenberger are no longer with us.  But their artistry lives on.
