One of most exciting singers today is Bulgarian soprano Alexandrina Pendatchanska. Toronto audiences have a chance right now to hear her as Elisabetta in Donizetti's Maria Stuarda.  The voice is a rare one—a dramatic coloratura with gleaming tone and steely power at the top. Her acting as Elisabetta is deliciously over-the-top, like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford rolled into one—you can't take your eyes off her. She also takes vocal risks. In the performance of Stuarda I attended last week, she went from a triple forte to a ppp in a split second, taking my breath away. The chest register tends to be a bit pushed, and the sound isn't huge, but there is no denying that everything she does is exciting. Here is Pendatchanska singing Elettra's aria "D'Oreste, D'Ajace" from Idomeneo, currently also on the COC stage. This aria is as close to a mad scene as any from Mozart. In Act 3, when Elettra loses her beloved Idamante to her rival Ilia, she wishes for her own death. This role has had some great interpreters, with the German soprano Edda Moser at the top of the list. Pendatchanska is right up there among the very best.

La soprano bulgare Alexandrina Pendatchanska est l’une des chanteuses les plus passionnantes actuellement. Les auditoires de Toronto ont en ce moment l’occasion de l’entendre dans le rôle d’Elisabetta de l’opéra Maria Stuarda de Donizetti. Sa voix est une perle rare; une colorature spectaculaire d’un ton éclatant et d’une forte puissance au début. Sa manière de jouer Elisabetta est délicieusement exagérée, comme un mélange entre Bette Davis et Joan Crawford, on ne peut pas la quitter des yeux. Elle prend aussi des risques vocaux. Dans la prestation de Maria Stuarda que j’ai vue la semaine dernière, elle est passée d’un fortississimo à un pianississimo en une fraction de seconde ce qui m’a coupé le souffle. Son registre de poitrine a tendance à être un peu forcé et le son n’est pas énorme, mais il est impossible de nier que tout ce qu’elle fait est passionnant. Dans ce vidéoclip, elle chante l’aria d’Électre D’Oreste, d’Ajace d’Idoménée présenté en ce moment par la Compagnie d’opéra canadienne. Cette aria se rapproche le plus possible à une scène de folie de Mozart. Dans le troisième acte, au moment où Électre perd son bien-aimé Idamante à sa rivale Ilia, elle souhaite mettre fin à ses jours. Ce rôle a connu de grandes interprètes avec la soprano allemande Edda Moser en tête de liste. Alexandrina Pendatchanska se tient parmi les meilleures.
