Comparisons of Ten Sopranos singing the "Preghiera" from Maria Stuarda / Une comparaison de dix sopranos qui interprètent la Preghiera dans Maria Stuarda

The Canadian Opera Company is presenting the first fully staged production of Maria Stuarda in Canada. It boasts a truly stellar cast - Italian soprano Serena Farnocchia in the title role, Bulgarian soprano Alexandrina Pendatchanska as Elisabetta, and American tenor Eric Cutler as Leicester.  Maria Stuarda, together with Anna Bolena and Roberto Devereux, are known as Donizetti's "Three Queens".  Composed in the bel canto style, the vocal and dramatic demands on the principals are daunting indeed - beauty of tone, coloratura flexibility, seemingly unending breath reserve, dramatic expression etc. It's no wonder that these operas are so rarely staged. In Act 3, near the end of the opera, when Mary Queen of Scots is about to be beheaded, she sings the prayer in which she forgives Queen Elizabeth and prays for her own deliverance. This Preghiera, accompanied by the chorus, is one of the most sublime moment in the opera. Here is an extremely interesting Youtube clip, comparing ten sopranos (the single exception is Dame Janet Baker who is a mezzo) in the long held note in the prayer which at the end rises to a high B. It lasts many measures, and requires rock solid technique and generous breath reserve. To my ears, the best singers in this comparison are Spanish diva Montserrat Caballe with her legendary breath line, and Italian Mariella Devia, who is also incredible in this role.  We will have an opportunity to hear the wonderful Serena Farnocchia as Maria Stuarda, starting Saturday, May 1.

La Compagnie d’opéra canadienne présente la première production théâtrale à part entière de Maria Stuarda au Canada. Elle peut se vanter de disposer d’une distribution étincelante qui comprend la soprano italienne Serena Farnocchia dans le rôle principal, la soprano bulgare Alexandrina Pendatchanska dans le rôle d’Elisabetta et le ténor américain Eric Cutler qui incarne Leicester. Maria Stuarda avec Anna Bolena et Roberto Devereux forment les trois oeuvres de Donizetti que l’on surnomme « les trois reines ». Composé dans le style de chant bel canto, les exigences vocales et dramatiques imposées aux chanteuses (ton mélodieux, colorature richement ornée, souffle interminable, expression dramatique, etc.) sont d’une difficulté impressionnante. C’est pourquoi ces opéras sont si rarement présentés. Dans le troisième acte, vers la fin de l’opéra, lorsque Maria est sur le point d’être décapitée, elle chante la Preghiera dans laquelle elle pardonne Elisabetta et elle prie aussi pour sa propre délivrance. Cette prière qui est accompagnée par le choeur est l’un des plus beaux moments de l’opéra. Voici un vidéoclip extrêmement intéressant qui compare dix sopranos (sauf Dame Janet Baker qui est une mezzo) lorsqu’elles chantent la longue note dans la Preghiera qui à la fin monte au si bémol. Ceci dure plusieurs mesures et exige une technique solide et un grand souffle. D’après mes oreilles, les meilleures chanteuses dans ce vidéoclip sont la diva espagnole Montserrat Caballe avec son souffle légendaire et l’italienne Mariella Devia qui est aussi incroyable dans ce rôle. Nous aurons l’occasion d’écouter la merveilleuse Serena Farnocchia dans le rôle de Maria Stuarda à partir du samedi 1^er mai.
