Louis Armstrong and Danny Kaye Jazz the Classics

Some extraordinary vocal virtuosity on display in this video. Armstrong was famous for his trumpet playing and his scat singing, and Kaye was a comedian with a rare gift for inventive rapid-fire word dexterity. Here they combine their talents in a unique version of "When the Saints Go Marchin' In."

If you haven't read it yet rush out and buy the new Armstrong biography "Pops" by Terry Teachout, published by Houghton, Mifflin, Harcourt. It includes a lot of new biographical material from some of Armstrong's own private tapes, as well as perceptive musical analysis of many of Armstrong's classic recordings.
