Karl Böhm conducts Overture to Der fliegende Hollander / Karl Bohm dirige l'ouverture du Vaisseau fantôme

The big news for Toronto opera fans this week is the return of Die fliegende Hollander to the Canadian Opera Company, in its Christopher Alden/ Allen Moyer production first seen in 1996 and revived four years later. This time around, it stars Russian baritone Evgeny Nikitin in his COC debut as the Dutchman, opposite the Senta of American soprano Julie Makerov. The rest of the cast include Mats Almgren (Daland), Robert Kunzli (Erik), Barbara Dever (Mary) and Adam Luther (Steuermann). New COC music director Johannes Debus conducts. The opera is performed without an intermission, but the music is so glorious that the last time I saw this production, the two and a half hours went by in a flash.  One of Wagner's earliest successes, one can hear in this opera musical ideas that resurface in his later operas such as Tristan and Gotterdammerung. To mark the occasion of the COC revival, I have chosen Karl Bohm conducting the Overture. There are sonically more spectacular or visually more pleasing clips of this Overture on Youtube, but you'll be hard pressed to find a better version than having Bohm at the helm.

Les amateurs d'opéra à Toronto seront ravis d'apprendre cette semaine que le Vaisseau fantôme (Der fliegende Hollander) sera remis en scène par la Compagnie d'opéra canadienne, dans la production créée par Christopher Alden et Allen Moyer en 1996, puis remontée en 2000. La production actuelle met en vedette le baryton russe Evgeny Nikitin qui fait son début au COC dans le rôle du Hollandais, face à la soprano américaine Julie Makerov, qui incarne Senta. Le reste de la distribution comprend Mats Almgren (Daland), Robert Kunzli (Erik), Barbara Dever (Mary) et Adam Luther (le pilote), sous la houlette du nouveau directeur musical du COC, Johannes Debus. Il n'y aura pas d'entracte, mais la musique est si belle que les deux heures et demie que dure l'opéra s'envoleront très certainement en un instant! Cette œuvre, l'un des premiers succès de Wagner, contient des idées musicales qui referont surface dans Tristan et le Crépuscule des dieux. À l'occasion de cette reprise au COC, j'ai choisi un vidéoclip qui montre Karl Bohm en train de diriger l'ouverture. On peut en trouver des versions plus agréables à écouter à regarder sur YouTube, mais aucune n'a la beauté de celle de Bohm.
