John Mark Ainsley sings "Fuor del Mar" from Idomeneo / John Mark Ainsley chante Fuor del mar d’Idoménée

The Canadian Opera Company's revival of Idomeneo opens this Sunday. Mozart was only 24 when he composed this work, his first successful opera seria. It had its premiere at the Cuvillies Theater in Munich in 1781. Located just around the corner from the National-Theater (where the Bavarian State Opera performs) in the Residenz, Cuvillies underwent major renovations and reopened two years ago during the Munich Opera Festival with a new production of Idomeneo. I had the pleasure of seeing a performance there with British tenor John Mark Ainsley in the title role. It was videotaped for DVD release. To mark its revival at the COC, here is Ainsley singing the bravura "Fuor del Mar", one of the greatest - and most difficult - of tenor arias in all of opera. Idomeneo is a heroic tenor role, requiring a substantial voice to sing incredibly florid music for over 6 minutes. Many tenors like Pavarotti and Domingo sing a simplified version, but the best (tenors Rockwell Blake, Ramon Vargas, Francisco Araiza, and Jonas Kaufmann among them) always sing the original version. Ainsley's singing here is exemplary, with near perfect intonation and fantastic fioritura. American tenor Paul Groves, a Mozart specialist celebrated for his elegant style, is COC's Idomeneo. I think the Toronto audience is in for a treat.

Ce dimanche, la Compagnie d’opéra canadienne ramène sur scène Idoménée. Mozart n’avait que 24 ans lorsqu’il composa cette œuvre et fut son premier opéra seria à connaître du succès. La première de l’opéra eut lieu au théâtre Cuvilliés à Munich en 1781. Le théâtre Cuvilliés qui est situé tout près du Nationaltheater München (où l’Opéra d’État de Bavière joue) au sein de la résidence de Munich connut des rénovations importantes et rouvrit il y a deux ans lors du Festival d’opéra de Munich avec une nouvelle production d’Idoménée. J’ai eu le plaisir de voir la prestation du ténor britannique John Mark Ainsley dans le rôle-titre. Ce concert fut enregistré sur DVD. Afin de souligner la reprise de cet opéra par la COC, voici M. Ainsley qui chante Fuor del mar, l’une des plus grandes et des plus difficiles arias pour ténor de tous les opéras. Idoménée est un rôle de ténor hardi qui demande une grosse voix pour chanter un air incroyablement orné pendant plus 6 minutes. De nombreux ténors comme Pavarotti et Domingo chantent une version simplifiée, mais les meilleurs ténors (Rockwell Blake, Ramon Vargas, Francisco Araiza et Jonas Kaufmann en autres) chantent toujours la version originale. Dans ce vidéoclip, le chant de John Mark Ainsley est exemplaire avec des intonations quasi parfaites et des fioritures fantastiques. Le ténor américain Paul Groves, un spécialiste de Mozart, qui est réputé pour son style élégant incarne le rôle d’Idoménée dans la production de la COC. Je crois que les spectateurs de Toronto vont être gâtés.
