American baritone Thomas Hampson is justly famous for his frequent appearances at the Met and for his commitment to American song, but he is also an authority on the music of Mahler. He recorded many of Mahler's great orchestral song cycles more than twenty years ago with Leonard Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic, and he is still very much in his prime as we approach the centenary of Mahler's death next year. Hampson is sure to be prominent in the the worldwide commemorations.

In this video Hampson talks about various aspects of Mahler's orchestration. He is convinced that there is a specific meaning in Mahler's choice of this or that instrument to convey his thoughts and feelings. This interview was recorded during rehearsals for performances of Mahler's Songs of a Wayfarer with Christoph Eschenbach and the Orchestre de Paris. Hampson speaks in English and there are French subtitles.

Le baryton américain Thomas Hampson est, à juste titre, célèbre pour ses nombreuses performances au Met et pour sa défense et illustration des compositions vocales américaines. Il fait également autorité en ce qui concerne la musique de Mahler. D’ailleurs, il a enregistré de nombreux cycles de chants avec orchestre de Mahler il y a plus de vingt ans avec Leonard Bernstein et la Philharmonie de Vienne. Il demeure tout aussi productif alors qu’on approche le centenaire du décès de Mahler l’an prochain. Hampson aura sûrement un rôle de premier plan à jouer dans les commémorations internationales.
