Ferenc Fricsay Conducts Smetana / Ferenc Fricsay dirige Smetana

There will always be artists and musicians who pass from the scene well before their time - Mozart and Schubert come immediately to mind . Among conductors there have been many abbreviated careers. I want to draw attention to one of them today and tomorrow.

Ferenc Fricsay died in 1963 at the age of only 48 on the verge of what would surely have been a remarkable career. Fortunately, he lived long enough to make many fine recordings, mostly with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and mostly for Deutsche Grammophon.

In today's video you will see him rehearsing the South German Radio Orchestra, Stuttgart in Smetana's Vltava or the Moldau from Ma Vlast. The work is a depiction of the river Vltava as it flows through Czechoslovakia, past Prague and into the Elbe. As you watch Fricsay at work you will notice that he spends much of his time painting a picture of the river as it courses through forests, meadows and mountains. Most conductors today concentrate on purely musical issues. You can judge for yourself whether Fricsay's method is effective or not. We'll bring you the performance itself tomorrow.  

You might also bear in mind Fricsay's physical condition in 1960 when this film was made. He had been through a series of operations to arrest the cancer ravaging his body but he was very close to the end of his career. He conducted his last concert in December, 1961. In this rehearsal excerpt, you will also notice that unlike most conductors Fricsay had a rather pleasant singing voice.

Parmi les chefs d’orchestre, nombreux sont ceux qui ont connu une carrière écourter. Je désire attirer votre attention sur l’un d’entre eux aujourd’hui et demain.   

En 1963, Ferenc Fricsay est mort à  48 ans seulement, à la veille de ce qui aurait certainement été une carrière remarquable. Heureusement, il a vécu assez longtemps pour faire plusieurs excellents enregistrements, la plupart avec l’Orchestre philharmonique de Berlin et l’Orchestre symphonique allemand de Berlin, et presque entièrement avec la maison de disques Deutsche Grammophon.   

Aujourd’hui, dans ce vidéoclip, vous allez l’apercevoir en répétition avec l’Orchestre symphonique de la SWR à Stuttgart dans la Vltava (ou la Moldau) l’un des 6 poèmes symphoniques qui composent Ma Vlast de Smetana. L’œuvre est une représentation de la rivière Vltava qui traverse la Tchécoslovaquie en passant par Prague pour se jeter dans l’Elbe. En regardant M. Fricsay à l’œuvre, vous allez remarquer qu’il passe la majeure partie de son temps à brosser un tableau de la rivière qui traverse les forêts, les prés et les montagnes. De nos jours, la plupart des chefs d’orchestre concentrent leurs efforts sur des thèmes qui portent uniquement sur la musique. Jugez-en par vous-même si sa méthode est efficace ou non. Aussi, tenez compte de la condition physique de M. Fricsay en 1960 au moment où le film fut réalisé. Il avait subi une série d’opérations pour empêcher le cancer de se propager dans son corps et il était très proche de la fin de sa carrière. Il dirigea son dernier concert en décembre 1961. Dans cet extrait, vous allez aussi remarquer que contrairement à la plupart des chefs d’orchestre, M. Fricsay chantait assez bien.
