Teenage phenomenon Alexander Prior Conducts Original Composition / Le prodige Alexander Prior dirige une œuvre de son cru

18-year-old conductor Alexander Prior is on his way to America from his native Britain. Prior is set to start a prestigious six-month fellowship created by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra especially for the young composer and conductor. This follows his rejection from all the British orchestras he approached, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic. In an interview with the London Evening Standard, Prior claimed that "the European establishments... are preoccupied with looking clever and arty-farty and not enjoying the music they are making.”

Trained in composition and conducting at the St Petersburg Conservatory, Prior has impressed the classical music world with the conducting finesse and mature neo-Romantic compositions he has been responsible for at such a young age. Critics are less impressed with his at-times overzealous style in both composing and conducting. Âgé de 18 ans seulement, Alexander Prior quitte son pays, l’Angleterre, pour se rendre aux États-Unis, où l’attend un stage de six mois assorti d'une bourse d'études que l'Orchestre symphonique de Seattle a décidé de lui accorder à titre exceptionnel. Le jeune compositeur et chef d’orchestre avait été refusé par tous les orchestres britanniques qu’il avait sollicités, dont le London Symphony et le Royal Philharmonic. Dans une entrevue au London Evening Standard, Alexander Prior soutient que « les élites européennes se prétendent très sophistiquées mais ne prennent aucun plaisir à jouer leur musique ».

Le jeune prodige, qui a étudié  la composition et la direction d’orchestre au Conservatoire de Saint-Pétersbourg, a impressionné les adeptes de la musique classique pour la finesse de son art et la maturité surprenante de ses pièces néoromantiques. Par contre, son style parfois très expansif ne fait pas l’unanimité chez les critiques.
