Spotlight on Met in HD Carmen Star, Latvian Mezzo Elina Garanca / Pleins feux sur Elina Garanca, la nouvelle Carmen du Met

 

In anticipation of the Met in HD Carmen tomorrow starring Latvian mezzo Elina Garanca, I have selected a clip of her when she was only 23 years old and fresh out of the conservatory in Riga. She sings the Aria and Cantilena from Heitor Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5. The date is 1999, and the location is the Mirjam Helin Singing Competition in Helsinki, which she won. The same year, she sang Maddalena in Rigoletto at the Savonlinna Opera Festival. This lovely Villa-Lobos work is usually sung by a soprano. It requires beauty of tone (of course) but also long breath line, freedom at the top and rock solid legato. The final section, with its wordless vocalise, shows off Garanca's gleaming high mezzo beautifully.

Puisque la mezzo lettonne Elina Garanca a été choisie pour incarner Carmen au Met, j’ai eu envie de revoir ce vidéoclip qui la montre à l’âge de 23 ans. Fraîchement émoulue du conservatoire de Riga, elle chante l’aria et la cantilène tirées de Bachianas Brasileiras N^o 5, d’Heitor Villa-Lobos. Nous sommes en 1999, à Helsinki, au concours de chant Mirjam Helin, qu’elle a remporté d’ailleurs. La même année, elle était Maddalena dans Rigoletto au Festival d’opéra de Savonlinna. Quant au Villa-Lobos, cette oeuvre magnifique est généralement chantée par une soprano. Elle exige une belle voix (bien sûr), un souffle phénoménal, une grande aisance dans les aigus et un legato sans faille. La dernière partie, une vocalise sans paroles, met en valeur sa splendide voix de mezzo-soprano léger.
